The winter solstice of 2020 was at 5:02 EST this morning.

The amount of light we have each day will get a little longer from here on out. Be that as it may, yesterday was also the first (official) day of winter, and I suspect that we will continue to have a disproportionate amount of darkness in our lives.

I was thinking about all of this in the small hours of the morning because I could not sleep.

Eventually, I got out of bed and went downstairs. As I did this, I passed a framed print my partner got me as a Christmas gift a few years back. The print has a simple image on it, a sunrise, I think, and a few lines of text from the poem Invitation, by Mary Oliver.

It is a serious thing

Just to be alive

On this Fresh Morning

In this broken world.

This is a good thing to be reminded of now.
